According to this report, police use of facial recognition in the US has increased significantly in recent years. It is seen as a key tool in achieving better results. However, many critics have raised the lack of transparency, systematic biases and invasion of privacy as a fundamental problem to be solved in the use of this technology.

On the other hand, it is noted that studies on the performance of facial recognition show systematic errors in identification, especially in people of color, which leads to a disproportionate reinforcement of vigilance towards different ethnic groups.

It is noted, in turn, that many different solutions to mitigate racial inequalities have been proposed by policy-makers and different stakeholders. At the technical level, these may point to sources of bias in the operation of the technology. However, many also prohibit or place barriers to use by law enforcement, as well as creating new legal protections on when and how to use this technology.
